Test-driven development

I feel it's important to provide some detail about TDD if we're going to talk about automated testing at all. TDD is a form of software design. It's primarily used from the ground up to flush out a design based on the usage of the API being created. In other words, the use of the API would be developed within tests to provide a real-world usage of the API (rather than being "academic"), and ensures that each and every piece of code is covered by one or more tests.

Coming more from a "Brownfield" type of a project where you've already got lots of code that "works," you may have the need for some small refactorings, bug fixes, or feature enhancements. A TDD-style of design can be used for feature enhancements.

The common mantra or mnemonic of sorts, with TDD is "Red, Green, Refactor". Red signifies a failed test in a test runner, green signifies the same test passing, and refactor means now that the test passes, you're safe to refactor.
